The facts about Hypnobirthing

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a full birth preparation course. It's comprehensive, evidence based and for every single birth. It teaches you powerful tools to help you to relax, gives you an in depth understanding of what happens during your baby's birth and helps you to alleviate any fears you have.

Rather than seeing birth as a painful and scary event, Hypnobirthing teaches you to trust in your amazing birthing body and approach birth with a sense of confidence. By using Hypnobirthing tools and techniques to help you relax during labour, Hypnobirthing can help to reduce stress, reduce pain, and increase your chances of having an empowering experience.

Hypnobirthing can also help you to understand what options are available to you, how to navigate the maternity system and help you to develop a good understanding of how to make the best decisions for you and your baby.

What the 'hypno' part of Hypnobirthing?

You might be surprised to learn that Hypnobirthing has nothing to do with how much of a hippy you are. The 'Hypno' in Hypnobirthing stands for hypnosis and it's this element that makes Hypnobirthing so powerful and unique compared to other antenatal courses. The hypnosis element of Hypnobirthing works by teaching you how to access a deep state of relaxation. When you're more relaxed during birth, birth happens much more easily and much more comfortably too.

The hypnosis element also allows your unconscious mind to be reprogrammed. This allows you to move away from fear and really look forward to the day you give birth.

How does feeling fearful affect birth?

When it comes to birth, most of us have pretty negative expectations. This is usually driven from other people's stories, the TV, social media and our over thinking minds. When people are fearful about giving birth, they become extremely tense when labour starts. This tension makes birth feel more painful. Once we feel pain, we can become even more fearful and even more tense. We get stuck in this vicious cycle and our bodies are pumped with adrenaline. This is our fight or flight hormones and it's not a hormone we want during labour.

With a Hypnobirthing course, we are aiming to break this cycle by minimising fear, enabling you to become more relaxed and therefore reducing your pain levels. Lots of people using Hypnobirthing didn't describe labour as painful.

The mind body connection in Hypnobirthing

Hypnobirthing focuses a lot on the role of the mind and the part this plays in birth.  This might sound a bit 'woo woo' but think about this - without the mind, the body wouldn't work. On a Hypnobirthing course, we focus specifically on the unconscious mind. One of the biggest functions of the unconscious mind is your basic survival instincts and it's also responsible for your emotions.

The unconscious mind processes things that it sees or hears as either safe or unsafe. It's really like a database of experiences. We might not remember an experience but our unconscious mind does.

So if you hear a scary birth story, your unconscious mind processes birth as unsafe. This means that when labour starts, your unconscious mind could trigger your survival mode, triggering a whole series of emotional, hormonal and physically responses to something it perceives as dangerous.

This is an amazing mechanism when you're actually in danger, but birth is not dangerous. When this response is triggered during birth, your experience is not likely to be a comfortable or enjoyable one.

On a Hypnobirthing course one of our key focuses is reprogramming the unconscious part of your mind, helping to alleviate any fears you have and make giving birth a more comfortable.
